I came accross this nifty idea for protecting hydraulic cylinder rods from damage and keeping dirt out of the hydraulics:

I protect my cylinders by retracting them all the way in. If this isn't possible, grease them with a good heavy grease such as open gear lube.

I grease anything (shafts) open to the winter weather.

The boot would be a good thing until it started holding water and dirt. For it to be effective you would have to keep it cleaned out and dry. Seems like another gimmick to me, just like the dust boots on aftermarket truck shocks, if you use them in the mud and grime they actually lessen the life of the shocks by holding crude around the seals.
