Oh, sorry. Well, considering every mechanical fuel sending unit I've seen, which is just a wirewound resistor with a sweeper arm, just brush leads from a 1.5V battery across the terminals (of the gage), see if the needle swings a bit. Shouldn't hurt it no matter how it's wired, especially if you, like mentioned, just quickly touch them. If NO movement, try 3V, then 4.5, then 6 blah blah. Should DEFINITELY have something by then. If not, it's burnt. Put a Ohmmeter across the sender's leads and move the float around. Should move the needle on the ohm meter set for the lowest scale you've got. If it seems shorted, keep uping the scale on the meter and check again. Eventually (well I've always seen them move on the low scale, but burnt a clock radio really good by thinking a 1 MEG ohm resistor was open on the low scale...) the needle should move with the float movement. No clue on the temp guage. They're wierder, somehow dampen things out and move very slowly, making the old safe "quick" test ineffective. However, you could see if you have any voltage at the + lead (to ground, avoiding the sending unit) when the key is on. If there isn't any voltage, something is wrong in the wiring I'd think. Also, you could take the sending unit out, measure the resistance. Put it in a pot of boiling water for 10 minutes, say, and pull it out and check the resistance again. These don't check the guage, but if these two checks check good, well... If you find something more definitive, let us know! Tools
