Treating rusted tin on crawler tractor

Any advice on how to deal with rusted tin (engine cover)? I have some ideas but as a novice don't trust my limited knowledge. Is there a sealer than can be applied over the rust, then paint, or should rust be removed, followed by primer, than finish coat(s) of paint.

Use the phosphoric acid available at the local paint store. It forms it own primer when dry and is ready to paint. I used it on my Farmall 100 with good results.

i have been repainting all kinds of things for 30 yr. and have tried every thing, paint remover-messy,sanding-takes a long time-can not get to all the parts, sand blasting-expence-can not do every thing, convertors-have had rust come back throught the finnished paint, just cleaning and painting over-does not look as good. i just found out about electrolis and so for this may be the best way to go, trying to figure out how to just drive the whole crawler in a vat and get every thing at one time! durlax makes a yellow zine cromate primer that has worked as good as any thing i have used, and i have tryied them all, you can get this paint at a good marine store and their enamales are really good,also i used to use a green zine cromate spray paint in a can on aircraft frames and parts, this was the best i have ever used, but i can not find this paint any more,also do not remember the brand of it,maybe someone can find it? the more time you spend on each part and get it cleaned by what ever means you choose, the finish job will show and you can have something to be proud of.what type od crawler are you working on? i am working on a jd440ic crawler

Check the postings on the paint & bodywork board, there is plenty of information on electrolytic derusting, as well as information on phosphoric acid rust conversion.

I have had good luck using a basic red oxide primer that you get at hardware store or farm store, but like the guys said first you wire brush and get 90% of the crap off. It can be rusty, buy has to have all the loose stuff off. Wash it off good, let it dry, then spray or brush it on. IN fact i wash off with a damp rag with enamel reducer on it. Any solvent left on the rusty metal will just act like thinner for the paint and let it bond better. Good stuff and only cost $20 gallon. I always use a brand called X-O-Rust.

Ideally all rust should be removed before primer and paint. There are several products on the market the are "rust converters" that work well if you have "clean" rust that is free of oil, particles, scale, paint, etc. You can either get spray or bottles. I have gotten the best results on sheet metal from sprays and have found the bottles work well on rusted cast iron.

Others may have other suggestions and preferences.

Sherwin-Williams sells a rust converter that works very good.I have used this extensively in industrial applications with great results.

I have has really good results with a product called Extend. It is available at most Auto Parts stores. Be sure to use a wire wheel or wire brush to get all loose rust off first. Then follow the instructions on the container. Be sure that the part is free of any dirt or grease. I have used this product on a lot of tools also.
