I started my 1969 MM M670 Super gas tractor this afternoon. Started a little hard, but once it got going, it sounded fine, only to shut itself off after no more than 20-30 seconds of running. The tractor has not been run for a couple of months, it DOES indeed have fuel in it, along with a new coil, new points and plugs. It seems to be either a fuel or ignition problem, but I cannot seem to pin it down. Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

I've experienced this on a number of tractors over the years. It's usually the gas flow from the tank to the carb. After it dies you can let it sit for about 30 minutes, or longer depending on how badly the line is plugged, and it will crank again. Trash builds up in the bottom of the tank and blocks the line even before it gets to the sediment bowl. Before a rebuild try taking the gas line loose and blowing compressed air through the line from the carb back to the tank.

Yeah, I know. Its been a few days. But how cold was it. Perhaps some ice in fuel lines or filter, could cause fuel trickle. Enough to start and run a moment. Not enough to run on.

on our 670 Super the needle valve in the carb would stick - just give the carb a couple of good taps with a hammer before starting - see if it stays running longer....

careful with the hammer...wife's uncle tapped his d17 one time..now has the only d17 in the county with a big patch brazed to the float bowl!!!

Engine needs fuel and electicity to run- if it sputters and dies, it's usually gas. Instant stop is lack of spark. Like any rule- it can be broken. If it restarts after a few minutes- check the carb for lack of fuel flow- anywhere between it and the tank. Ice, obstruction, filter, etc. New electrical parts usually point to carb and fuel problems. If you have spark- either check by hand (ouch) or short plug to frame- then go for the fuel options.

Couple things to do to start troubleshooting.

1)After you get it started, When it starts to die...does it just quit like you turned off the ignition? (indicating a probable ignition problem)

2) If it sputters a second before it dies, Try pulling out the choke and see if it tries to pick up and run again. If it tries to fire at least one more time, you probably have a fuel problem somewhere. Carb, Pump or possible plugged lines somewhere.

First do you have spark from the coil, if so do you have spark at the plugs. If yes to both, pull the plug out of the bottom of the carb, do you get a good flow of gas. If yes shut alittle starter fluid in the carb and see if it trys to start, if it does have the carb rebuilt. Hope thishelps

Forgive my ignorance here..... but if the tractor starts, doesn't that mean there has to be spark from the coil, as well as spark at the plugs? Is it possible for the tractor start and run a short while if there is a problem with spark? I appreciate the help.

I had a tractor that would start at times and after a few minutes or maybe a few seconds die it was a loose wire under the hood, the vibartion of the engine running would make it stop. But yes it is more likely to be the carb
