I made the mistake of borrowing a poorly maintained F 3000 Diesel from a friend. A hydraulic hose ruptured below the seat and sprayed oil onto the muffler (which was down below). No fire extinguisher within miles. I have learned several important lessons and have purchased my first tractor … a real fixer upper !! Paid top dollar for this Ford so I might as well fix her up. I plan to use the tractor for many years so I want to try and do a first class job. This one is not going to be sold. I am about ready to embark on this restoration project. I have built a few hot rods in my youth but have no experience with tractors.
With all of the new improvements in ignition systems, the advent of power steering, and ROP’s …. I want this to be a very safe workhorse when I am finished. The tractor is probably fine as far as the major mechanical parts. I am sure there will be many seals, o-rings, etc to replace. The most obvious areas needing attention are; new wiring, new hydraulic lines, all sheet metal, rims, and rear axle are burned so I will sand blast and repaint the entire tractor, new seat , steering wheel, gauges, tires, etc. The radiator needed to be replaced anyway. Tractor will be equipped with a VERTICAL exhaust system for sure.
First - Is there a source for shop manuals other than IT? Bought one of those and am not too satisfied. Second – I want to add power steering … are there other upgrades I need to consider before starting this project? Any advice will be appreciated as will any sources of information. Thanks in advance.

Yo Doug,
I have a '70, 3000 gas. A fine unit. You could have chosen worse to have an accident with. When finished yours will be a prime piece. The 3000 is an excellent tractor. I'd work with the local NH dealer for spec. sheets and jump on the discussion forum under Ford and see if someone has a spare manual that they are willing to part with. The NH folks will be able to give advice on putting a PS unit on your ole girl. If possible, then the search of junk/bone yards begins. Go Blue!!!

Hi Doug,

First of all sorry to hear about your bad luck on the 3000. It is amazing how quickly hydraulic oil can catch fire and burn. On the manual issue- have you tried the local Hew Holland (Ford) dealer's parts department? I was able to get a shop manual for one of my older fords not too long ago so would imagine they would have one for the 3000. It is a bit more expensive than the IT manual but had a lot more detailed information and pictures to help me with my tractor.

Best of luck with your restoration.

Bob
