I am trying to decide what welder to buy. My freind says it should have variable controls on both speed and heat(he thinks multiple settings on heat is not good enough. He also thinks the cables should be at least 10 feet long. I would like it to use 115voltage. I will use it for mending sheet metal on tractors and perhaps cast iron repairs. I ahve friends that are good welders and can help with more complicated problems. I am currently looking at a Hobart 135. The owner wants $350. What suggestions have oyu?...jay

I have a cheapo from harbor freight. The only problem I have with mine is it didn't come with a regulator for the bottle and the work time is short. I also got a stick welder from the same place. I bought the set for less than 250.00

I have however been able to reliably weld half inch steel with the mig (sledge hammer tested it)and I looked up cast iron welding and bought a special set of sticks specifically designed for cast. Which I built a set of dual exhausts for an old plymouth slant six about a year ago with. They are holding great and with no problems. So I guess what I am trying to say is "Get something you think you will be happy with" I love my welders and would flatten anyone who messes with them. My next project is a 65 mustang rear quarter and I have no doubts of their ability to do the job right and reliable. Oh ya I have still yet to use argon with my welder, but I want to with the mustang.

If you are content with just doing sheet metal then the 115V welders do a nice job. Cast iron is not in the picture for this kind of a welder. I have a Lincoln 115V and like it for sheetmetal up to 16 gauge. I use a Miller S32P for heavier work. I suppose you could run cast if you were willing to go to a stainless wire and Argon gas but wouldn't have enough heat with the 115V. Forget the cast with this kind of welder.

Jay: I have a 135 and I've been very pleased with it during the 3 years I've owned it. I don't know what shape the one you're looking at is in, but $350 isn't far off the price of a new one--if I were you, I'd just buy new and save the potential for headaches that come with buying used. Stick with one of the 3 major brands (Miller, Lincoln, and Hobart in no particular order) and you won't go too far wrong. Variable heat is nice, but not nearly as important on a MIG as it is on a stick welder, at least in my experience.

TSC just sent me thier December flyer and they have the Handler 135 on sale for $398.95 plus you get the auto darkening helmet for $.01 more.I have a 135 and like it alot.
