I have a massey 135 and the transmission was clicking and now the only way i can make it move is to push the diff lock.

what could be wrong and what should I check and also how hard is it to fix.

I dont know the year of the tractor. it does have the high and low lock out and is a three speed with a gas engine.

please email me if you can help

Ryan

If it moves with diff lock engaged but not with it out, that suggests to me that something is broken in differential or rear axle. Could be a broken half shaft, but more likely something in the diff itself. Clicking might suggest a bearing, or gear, in differential has disintegrated. I'd suggest putting it in gear (with engine off)jacking it one side at a time and seeing if you can rotate either of the rear wheels. If you can turn one, that is the side where the trouble lies. After that you will probably have to strip it to see what's gone wrong. To fix diff bearings you would need to remove diff which comes out via one side of the transmission case after the axle housing has been removed. - trouble is I don't know which side. You may also have to remove top cover and PTO shaft. Someone on MF board will be able to tell you the details. It isn't a minor repair but its certainly manageable without a lot of specialist equipment, if you're keen. I'd guess two days to complete job methodically, or possibly 1 day if under pressure to get it going again.
