jd 400 hydraulic fluid leaks into crankcase

my hydraulic fluid fills up the crankcase after 2 hrs of use... what may be causing the two to mix together? it is a 1971 400 backhoe

Hey Rob, I'm not familiar with how your machine is set up for the hydraulic pump drives, but I can give you a general answer. Normally when something like this is happening the pump is coupled to and driven directly from gearing in the engine so the input shaft of the pump is "open" to the engine crankcase. If the shaft seal on the pump goes bad then hydraulic fluid bypassing the seal goes into the engine causing the problem you describe. Again I'm not familiar with how your machine is set up, but look for a hydraulic pump that is bolted directly to the engine, and I bet you'll solve your problem. Good luck.

Are you shure its hyd. fluid? I have never seen this happen on a 400 unless it has a steering pump mounted on the front of the motor. Most of the time if its a diesel it leaks diesel in the oil pan through the injection pump.
