My 8N is eating Magneto's

Hi all;
I have a friends husband who has been doing some repairs on an 8N I bought a cople of months ago.
This thing is eating magneto's. Jason replaced
the 2 magneto's on the tractor. Had it running,
brought it home, started it and ran it around
a bit, then when out to start it and it didnt to start, so Jason came out and looked at it, and the new magneto he put in it about a month ago is cracked. Any ideas on why this is happening?

My 9n did that a couple of times> The Fan shroud was lose and was rattling against the rotor cap.

check and make sure the bolster pin that the front axle pivots on has a lot of slop.friend had one that keep eating caps,slop in front end allowed the front axle to flex and push against mag cap good luck

I would post this on the 8N board. It is interesting because very, very, very few 8N's had magnetos.

The coupler in the engine may be worn or not aligned correctly. Worn bearings or bushings in shaft driving mag. Worn or bad govenor. Sometimes shimming with extra gaskets will help if a mag doesn't mount flush with the flange. If it has a gap behind flange and won't mount flush and is not shimmed and forced down with a wrench it will put stress on the mag housing and internal bearings and will break it or ruin it. If it has the gear box drive there could be wear in the gear box causing this.

Drove an 8N for my dad in the 50's. Worst tractor I have ever driven, before or since (I say this regardless of their past and present popularity-my opinion only, not interested in starting and will not respond to arguments). If the bushing, bearing or whatever in the pivot portion of the front axle is worn, the distributor/mag will crack. I am assuming your mag is on the front of the engine. If not forget what I just typed.

Well, I'm not sure as I didnt see the orginal one when he replaced it, the tractor was at his
house.

I would see if he knows if it was cracked. I'm not a Ford man myself so this is just a "General Guideline" If the original was cracked, Post the numbers off of the mag you have and see if anyone can tell you for sure if that is infact the right mag for the tractor. If the original was not cracked, See if you can verify the numbers from the original to the new one. Another possibility is that it was cracked during installation. Just a couple things to check to start with.

Oops..that should read Jason replaced two magneto's on the tractor.
