hydraulics lifting slowly

I have a John Deere model 40-W tractor. The hydraulics are lifting slow when the tractor is warm, and when hooked onto a heavy implement such as a 6 ft. disk. I have been told to claen the screen. Does it even have a screen for the hydraulics? Any help you could provide me with would be appreciated. E-mail me at [email protected]. Once again thanks.

The tractor has no screen or filter. Tthe most likely cause is a weak pump. check the pump pressure with a gauge teeded in tne small line on theleft side of the transmission housing. Should read about l200 # pressure, however do not close of the pump completly, if it is good it will split the line from the pump. A low setting on the relief valve will be weak hot or cold. These lift were designed for 10 wt non detergent oil and as the pump wore farmers used a heavier oil, like 30 wt. they will foam sometimes with detergent oil, also the dirt/sludge is supposed to fall out of the oil in the resivoir. Worked with JD when this tractor was popular, they were good lifts for their time, just no filter to clean the oil. Gene Davis
