I have an antique race car that uses a IHC magneto that looks to be the same type as used on a Farmall F12. Is there anyone out there who could help me with some questions I have about this style of mag? I am desperate! Please Help!

Sincerely, Jeff Adams Coal Valley, Illinois

I have a Farmall F12 magneto also. The owner's manual has a very good magneto service section. It is about 6 pages long and very detailed. My only problem is that my owner's manual is an F14 manual, and they changed the magneto. I didn't find out until very far into my restoration project that my tractor (which said "f14" on the side of it) is actually an f12 with a factory f14 upgrade kit on it, so I ordered an f14 book which has a different magneto. These f12 books are available, though. There are lots of them on ebay, but they are about 20 bucks, and you may not have that much time.

Sorry I couldn't help more.

It is probably an International Harvester F-4 magneto. Possibly an E-4A, but I think F-4 was more common on F-12's.

Does it look like this?

My e-mail is above, make sure that you put something in the subject line like "magnetos" to catch my eye, I get tons of spam.
I may not be the best one to talk to, I'm far from a magneto expert, most of what little I know about them concerns H-4's, which came later than the F-4's. The last F-4 I worked on, I ended up taking it to a magneto shop and for $50 they made it work like a new one.
However, I'll do the best I can to help you out.

I don't know how to do this internet thing. My first try.

I am having magneto trouble. My Farmall F12 has an aftermarket magneto. It is a Fairbanks-Morse X4A11. It worked when we got the tractor in 1988.
It has been in a shed most of the time since.

Condensor tests ok, but tried a different condensor from another old magneto to no avail. Points are good and gapped to .013". All wiring has been tested end to end. The coil measures about 5,000 ohms. I found out that if you put your hand on the high tension contact and spin the magneto manually it will deliver a pretty good shock. I removed the distributor cap and hooked a spark plug wire directly to the contact and put a plug in the other end. I grounded the plug to the magneto housing and manually turned the magneto. This should eliminate any engine timing questions. If the thing can generate a spark it should do it that way. I am theorizing the magnets are bad. Anyone have any other thoughts?

Thanks!

Mike
