I took the inspection cover off of my 8n & noticed a small crack in the tappet housing. The runs down from the opening toward one of the oil drain holes. I was wondering what I need to do about it. Can it or should it be welded to stop the crack or just let it be? Thanks

Not being truly familiar with the lifter situation in an 8N I can offer only general advice.

On some engines the lifters are not under pressure fed oil, only what drains back from the head is what lubes them. If your engine is this type I would not worry about it.

If the lifters are under oil pressure then you might have a problem. The crack will allow oil to escape rather than reach the lifters as it is supposed to.

What I would be most worried about is the crack continuing on the other end until it reaches the outside somewhere. Then you are going to have a major leak.

Drilling the ends of the crack will stop it from spreading. As you state, one end is already at a drain back hole and the crack will not be able to go any further in that direction.
