This old gal needs some work. Can anyone help me with these issues? 1st: with these serial no.s 41205 65662 - is this a 1964 model? And can I tell from this if it's 172 cid?
2nd: I think the hydraulic pump needs rebuilding -are there external indications as to whether it has a wobble shaft pump or a piston pump?
3rd: it is extremely hard to steer, fluid comes out of the top of the steering column, and leaks from the power cylinders (a little), fluid comes out of the power steering pump breather, too. Central Tractor used to offer rebuilt steering gear and control box assemblies. I guess they are out of business. Can anyone tell me if others offer these assemblies? Power cylinders available any where? Are the old ones rebuildable? Any answers/advice greatly appreciated. thanks - Ron

Thanks for the info. It does steer easily with the front blocked up. Am I resigned to finding seals, bearings, etc. that I mic and buy the same size? Can I find a new valve and valve housing?
Anybody know, if so where?

Ron, I would like to help you, but need to ask some more questions before I can give solid answers, please bear with me. Of course I could suggest you replace alot of parts, for lots of $$$$. I don't like to spend alot of $$$$ and I don't like to throw a lot of parts at a tractor and hope it will fix problems.

Is this a working tractor that you need back in the field fully functional asap? Or is it a weekend worker, that you can limp along for a short while?

For the power steering gearbox, there are some things that can be rebuilt, I am aware of some issues about nylon bushings as replacement for real bearings(not good). There are some reliable people who deal in used but usable parts( whole steering box replacement vs. rebuilding your own). You can try your local NH dealer, but I do not think new units are still available, seals and bearings maybe.

Your power steering pump filter should be available from the NH dealer, if you live in an agricultural community NAPA, CarQuest, or Ag equipment repair shop. Seals for the pump should also be available.

On your hydraulic pump, what symptoms lead you to believe that the pump needs rebuilt/replaced? There again parts are available, but it may not be your pump. It could be in the controls, lift mechanism or fluid. Or a combination of any or all of the above.

Where are you located? There are some web sites that list tractor salvage yards. I'll have to look through some of my materials.

Okay here's a run down- Yeah, I use this tractor a lot, I can get by with another machine, but it's too big for a lot of what I do- here's what I know -That little #10 reverse threaded metric slotted bolt that holds the driven gear on the pump sheared, the driven gear canted/stuck and the cam shaft exploded. When I repaired that and put in a new cam shaft and drive gear, a mechanic friend told me that the bearing wear on the woble plate bearing indicated time to rebuild. At that time it was an a.s.a.p. job and I decided to limp along until I had more free time & $$$$. The hydraulics are SLOW,& shakey at times, but seems to function thru all the controls, problems are the 3 point has a tendancy to settle 3" and jump back when in full up. It has a dead spot that drops my implement at almost all the way down -very touchy adjusting a scraper blade say. The pto spins all the time (valve stuck open somewhere?)can't be much 'cause you can stop it with a broom handle applying pressure, didn't figure it was worth it to fix that little of a problem, but I should probably do the whole back end?? The select o speed trans seems to work okay - fourth gear is scarey (seems to slip)so I don't use it/need it, and I had to adjust reverse - otherwise it's stong-it could probably use a filter change, but I have a real hard time getting parts here in the middle of Utah. The implement stores are way more intrested in telling me I need a newer tractor than looking for parts for this old girl.(I don't blame them mind you) I've done an in frame engine over haul. Rebuilt the heads and had the crank turned. the engine's strong, the trans is strong, I've put new spindles and bearings all thru the front end and replaced a broken rear drive shaft (some one had broken that before I got this machine and welded it poorly) after this much work on it I kind of hate to give up. The tractor is the perfect size for a lot of my needs! I don't like spending lots, that's why I do the labor myself. I don't consider myself a great mechanic by any stretch - that's why I'm asking for all this info! I did have a local tractor mechanic's ear for a minute, and he told me it sounded like I needed to rebuild or get a good steering control box. I've also been told that the rotor type power steering pumps which I have, aren't really rebuildable. That the shafts tend to make their seats out of round and that this allows bypass reducing pressure/effectivness of the pump?? That I'm better off getting a new one$$$$$. I will spend what I have to, to fix her up again,up to a point. I am really trying to pin point exactly WHAT to fix,and what is available out there, that I can get to fix it with.
