I have a case 480CK, and ran it out of fuel. Filled it up and a buddy of mine said that I should use Starting fluid to get it primed and then it will start. Well I used two cans of starting fluid and it ran as long as I continually sprayed the fluid. But it still won't stay running on its own. Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks to everyone who gave me advice on getting my beast started. Replaced the filters, bled the system, threw away the starting fluid. She cranked, started, surged for a few minutes and runs like a raped ape. Made sure the tank is full and hopefully won't ever do that again. Thanks again to everyone who gave me words of wisdom. - Morris

I'm a little behind time but thought I would put my two cents worth in. 1. If you don't have it running yet, change your fuel fiter or filters before you try any more. Don't forget to empty your fuel bowl and clean the screen. 2. I agree, NEVER use starting fluid. 3. Get yourself a owners manual for your tractor. You will be able to order one from your Case dealer. I don't know where you are from, but you can get a "I&T" service manual at Tractor Supply or on line at Amazon.com. 4.Every one has run a diesel out of fuel , but usually only once. Fill your tank up after using your tractor to keep condensation out of your fuel. . If all else fails Have someone pull start you. That's better then burning up your starter or running down your battery.By pulling the tractor you will purge a lot of air from your system. Good Luck. Bill

When all else fails, follow the instructions. But if you don't have the Operator's Manual, how do you know what the instructions are? Morris, the best advice anyone on these discussion boards can give you is, "Get the operator's Manual for your model of tractor." You will enjoy your tractor more, save hundreds of dollars in repair bills and make your tractor last much longer. I can't understand why fellows will put out thousands for a tractor they know nothing about and then shy away from paying $29.95 or so for a manual that will help protect their investment. It just doesn't make much sense, does it? Starting fluid or ether can ruin your engine in short order if not used judiciously. Some diesels are designed to use it and some are not. The operator's manual will tell you. Your friend may not be an idiot, but he's probably not a diesel mechanic either, is he? Good luck, Jim

like the other guys said bleed out the system good and your buddy is a idiot you dont use starting fluid to get it going again thats a good way to ruin the engine

Oh, the horror of it all! I can here the sound of a diesel running on starting fluid. That is a great way to get a new engine, becouse the old one won't be worth too much, in a short time. DO NOT USE OVER A SHORT BURST OF STARTING FLUID,EVER. This stuff is extremely volitle, and will blow the top of your pistons right into the oil pan. (Not a good place for pistons to end up!) Follow the step-by-step instructions for bleeding the fuel system. Get ALL the air out. Then when it does start, let it run for a while without any load, to allow the air bubbles to work their way out. You will notice the engine pulsing up and down for a while. when it stops that, you're ready to go. (Then watch the fuel gauge from now on.)

Had the same problem when I ran out my 580CK going uphill. If you have the 188D, then all you should have to do is add diesel, open the bleed screws on the primary and secondary filters until fuel flows, then close and open the bleed screw on the injector pump. With luck, you shouldn't have to go beyond the pump. If you're not sure which is the bleed screw, follow the fuel line to where it enters the pump and its in that piece. If you can't get fuel at the primary filter, you may need to do an element change. I had them so blocked once that they wouldn't bleed past the filter. Its a wonder it even ran. Have fun!

You will probably need to bleed the air out of the fuel system. That is the usual procedure if you run out of diesel or have had the fuel system apart. I don't know the machine you have but basic procedure you shoudl find bleed points on top of the fuel filter and on the fuel injection pump. Slacken one on filter first. Fuel lift pump will probably have a manual lever on it and you pump that until you get fuel from the bleed point and then you close it. Also do point (or points) on injection pump in same way. After that you need to undo high fuel high preesure pipes at injectors and (with engine control in run position and throttle open) crank engine on starter until you get fuel coming out of each fuel pipe. You should see it coming out as pulses as the injection occurs. Engine obviously won't start with pipes slackened. When you get fuel, tighten injector pipe up again and engine should then be able to start more or less as normal. (If lift pump doesn't have a manual lever you will have to do all stages by cranking engine rather than manually priming it.)
