What is the best way to remove paint from a ID. plate, without harming it. Thanks

I've always had luck using the Spray-On brand, as well as a few other brands, of paint remover that comes in an aerosol can. Depending on how thick the paint is I either spray it directly on the tag and wipe it off, or spray it on a rag and apply it that way. I have cleaned off painted tags without damaging the origional paint on them, and some times I haven't been so lucky, so there are no guarantees on that. I guess it just depends on what they were painted with in the beginning. One of the main things is to be sure to have plenty of water, or whatever is called for, to neutralize the stripper when it cuts as far as you want it to. Good luck.

I have recently painted 2 tractors. I went over them, and cleaned up stray paint when they were done. I had several tags to clean. (Engine I.D.#, Injector pump I.D.#, ect.) I used spray "Brake Cleaner" from NAPA Auto Parts. Spray it on a rag, and go CAREFULLY. It removes MOST paint. Some "tags" are painted also, so be careful, and work slowly. I have got paint off of belts, alternators, d anything else that needs it. JUST BE CAREFUL. This stuff will take the paint right off of things that stay painted, if you're not carefull.

when the paint is old and hard i usualy get away with using my pocket knife.

But do you get away without leaving scrapes & scratches? I'v seen several plates ruined as I watched by people using pocket knives to clean off dirt and crud.....

Have used lacquer thinners to remove paint on plastic and metal nameplates without any damage. Try it on a corner first to be sure. Paint on the plastic "peel off" nameplate was ten years old ( on a Dodge P.U.)
