Rusty Gas Tank

My first tractor is a '67 IH756. It seems to be in great shape, except it has a lot of rust sediment in the gas tank. It was kept in a shed for about 10 years without use - I guess the water vapor got to it.

How can I get the sediment out of the tank AND keep the tank from developing any more rust?

I had a John Deere Fuel tank that was unbelievable rusty and dirty inside. I took it to my local radiator shop and had them clean it out in the vat...then they coated the inside of the tank with what amounts to a new lining for the tank. The tank lining is such that if anything does remain inside the tank after cleaninf it is stuck to the tank walls and won't cause you any problems. Also the inside of the tank will not rust during storage of the tractor.

also the orange milk stone remover can be used to eat the rust off of anything

put a couple handfuls of gravel inside and role it around with gas inside , keep roling and rinsing with gas until relativily clean the n take stones out and rinse with carb and choke cleaner the rest will end up in the sedament bowl.

John, There are alot of different ways to do it. Some people wash it out good with soap and water then strap the tank to a tractor wheel with a piece of chain in the tank till all the rust comes loose, then wash it again.(not a big fan of this) Pressure washers or a carwash does a pretty good job of cleanong them too. Spray soap in every little nook of the inside of the tan . Be sure if you do one of these, leave the tank in the hot sun to dry it completely. Try to keep your tank as full as you can to help prevent more rust. You can also use a good product called POR15. Works great and also coats the entire inside fo your tank. Do a internet search for POR15 or POR 15, you should find it.

There is also a product known as "Kreme" It is a liquid tank liner available at most motorcycle shops..... I haven't bought any for a while...I think they still make it though..

Yes they still make Kreem ;Just recently bought some and it works great but i had to use muratic acid on my tank because it was rusted so bad that nothing else would held remove the rust; A 50/50 mix did the job but I had to take all the precautions and use gloves and not to breath the fumes and to dilute it after I was done with lots and lots of water Good Luck on your Tank!
