I have a JD 40T that I am starting to restore this fall. I need to break the tractor apart to do some transmission and clutch work as well as replace seals and a very noisy clutch shaft/bearings.

What I need is a set of stands (front and rear). Anybody know where I can buy a set that would support a 40T, or does anyone have a set of plans that I can use to build stands?

Heavy angle iron stands with big steel casters on concrete floor works well. Most housings are rounded on the bottom so a little "V" in the top cross member helps keep it saddled on the stand (vertical tabs at the end of upper cross members can also help keep it there). You will need to move things around once split. Level concrete floor is best bet. If there is any way to design stand so you can bolt stand to tractor castings that is preferable. Safety and keeping the split halves on their stands is paramount.

I am just finishing the restoration of a '51 JD MT. Before I began the project, I went to several salvage yards looking for some parts missing on the MT. While looking around, I found several final drive housings from various tractors that had broken collars, etc... I was able to get them for scrap metal price. I took a piece of 8" steel channel and cut into 12" lengths. Welded the channel onto a piece of 2" pipe approx. 12" long. Slid the pipe into the axle hole and you have stands. Because the housings are very heavy and have a large mounting surface to use as a base, they work really well for stands.
