Allis B wiring

A "friend" was helping me repair my Allis B. We had re-built the carburetor, did the plugs (with new wires), points, etc. etc. When it came to re-wiring the whole tractor, he started cutting, snipping and throwing the old wiring away. Saying all the time, "We'll replace all of these and it will be as good as new."
One thing led to another as he lost his job, moved away and I'm left with a tractor that I can't finish. There is a wiring diagram on the battery box and I think I could pull this off, but I don't know what gauge wire to use or how to route it. The wiring that was removed was fabic covered and I assume was original. The tractor has a 12 volt alternator and battery.
Any help or direction would really be appreciated.

Hi Bob,

You would probably do better by posting your question on the Allis forum rather than here. Or the "unofficial allis" site.

In any event the diagram decal that's probably on your battery box is likely the original B wiring. Your tractor has apparently been modified so those connections would not be correct. For instance, the B never had an alternator and was 6 volt positive ground. Yours is likely 12 volt negative ground. It may or may not have an external voltage regulator. You may also not be fully utilizing the original switchbox if at all. You may even have a solenoid pushbutton start, also not covered by the decal diagram. Distributor plus external coil vs. magneto is another variable in the wiring.

Original wiring harnesses are available but you really don't need one. Since you are not original anyway, it doesn't really matter. It would be a rather expensive convenience, I think. Plus you likely would have to add to it anyway. You can start by checking out the diagrams at this site (scroll around) for some information but yours may be pretty much a custom wiring job depending on the extent of alterations that were done in the past. In any event I would suggest you use 10 gage wire from the alternator main lug to the ammeter and thence to the battery. 12 gage for the rest would be more than enough with the exception, of course, of the battery cables themselves.
