Rusty Hydraulic Cylinder

I need a mounted cylinder for a Massey 444. Saw
one, but the piston shaft is pitted with rust,
after 47 years. Surface rust can be removed with
some polish products, and some buffing. What helps when the old chrome-like shine/smooth has
turned to pitted rust? Putting seals into this
would be a monthly necessity. Since no parts are
available, is this a custom job to have plated? I
could search more, but freight may exceed repair
of the one I saw. Thank you.

There is a type of shafting available just for cylinder shafts. A good machine shop can make on for you. A good hydraulic shop can match up packing pretty well.

They can be made at a good machine shop cheaper than buying a new rod at dealer.

Thank you. I spoke with a machine shop tech today.
He can buy the 1 1/4" shaft(about $25.), plus $75.
for fitting it. Now, it's decide to buy the fixer,
or look further... Decisions, decisions.
