Stuck Rings in IH DT282

I have been working on a TD9 with a DT282 in it. It had sit for 8 years but I have it running fairly good. I have had all injectors tested and cleaned but am still getting white smoke on numbers 2 and 4. I've swapped injectors, set clearances on valves. I've been told I have stuck rings and all it needs is ran hard for a few hours and it will clear up. I pulled the glow plugs and put a half cup of WD-40 to soak overnight. I turned it over to spray the WD-40 out the holes and put the glow plugs back. I ran it for about an hour and half and it runs fine with a partial load on the engine but when it returns to idle it starts smoking again. I have marvel mystery oil in the crankcase as well.

Anybody got any ideas on freeing these rings up they have had success with?

Well the acetone, PB Buster and solvent did not work. I guess it will get the vineger.

I have talked with guys near here at a tractor and equipment salvage yard and they told me that the fist thing they do is pour a cup of vinegar in each of the cylinders. Supposedly it soaks down into the rings and disolves the rust and frees up the rings after setting for about 3 days.

I have used PB Blaster with good results.

I might give it a try. I am letting it soak tonite with about 1/2 cup of acetone in each cylinder. While it won't do the rust I know it will play heck on the gum and varnish. Vinegar, makes some sense for the rust I will go with PB Blaster first then give the vinegar a try. I was actually going to soak it tommorrow with the PB believe it or not. Thanks for the advice, I'll let you know if it works.

Freeing up rings does happen over night, took me a week of daily application of PB plus daily turning over, checking compression to freeup 11 yrs of setting on an Oliver 66. I personaly would shy away from vinegar 94% water and 6% acetic acid.

I have to admit I don't use the vinegar. Never sounded like a good idea to me either.

Had one guy tell me that he used brake fluid and it would work every time. Yeah..... right. Ever notice how much rust developes in the bottom of brake cylinders from the hydroscopic action of brake fluid?

I would not use brake fluid. I don't think it is compatable with oil at all. I am soaking it some more with PB. I have done this twice but only left it in for a day at a time. I will go out and turn it over and add more tommorrow and so on till it has soaked a week. Then I guess I'll just run it. It runs fine when hot and has a slight load on it so maybe 5 or 6 hours of working it hard will get them limbered up. Thanks for all the advice.
