Help !!! I have an AC D-17 gas tractor an my problem is that when I bought it about 5 years ago it had 35lbs oil presure and it slowly dropped over the years down to about 10lbs on start up and down to about 2lbs on warm up. It does not burn oil nor does the oil smell burnt. Oil stays clean with filter change on a regular basis. Do I need a new oil pump or overhaul or both? Compresion is 120lbs on all four cyl. Any help is welcome. Thanks very much in advance.

Older AC tractors- prior to the D Series, used a guage that said NORMAL, and normal pressure was about mid-scale. D17 should have a guage mounted in the dash cluster, not by the oil filter. Older tractors ran about 6-10 lbs. pressure. If your compression is 120 lbs and even across the cylinders, the engine does not need an overhaul, although an oil pump problem is still a possibility. An I&T service manual can give detail on required oil pressure, checked with an accurate guage reading in actual pounds.

Did you change your oil pressure gauge? I learned on the AC we site that the gauge measures bypass pressure and not the true pressure. A lot of the gauges on ACs just show low, medium and high. Mine has a numerical gauge and just shows about 18 lbs. If you used a manual gauge to check your pressure previously and you are now using the one on the tractor, then this may be the reason that your readings are not consistant. There is a good AC website on the computer and it has all kind of tips for ACs. Just go to Allis Chalmers in your search engine and this will diect you to it.

Thanks tom, the guage I have is numerical and it's mounted right below the oil filter. I used a different guage and got the same readings. Where wolud I find the true pressure conection as opposed to bypass pressure? I also blew out all the oil lines in hopes that would help. Thanks again for your help.
