My tractormeter, tachometer, call ut what you want, doesn't give a steady reading but the needle bounces up and down a fair bit. Is there a way to cure this? Tried lubricating the inner cable but no different.

Tach and cable are both brand new but I'll try running tach separately and see what happens.

You might have a worn spot on the inside of the cable housing. The cable is hanging momentarily until the torque build enough to force it beyond the rough spot and the cable then "unwinds" faster than normal for an instant.

Try running the tach with an electric drill without the cable, using a short length of stiff wire a few inches long. See if the tach is stable. If so the problem is in the cable drive.
