Stuck engine

I heard of a good way to break loose a hopelessly stuck engine. take an old spark plug, break out the center, and braze or weld a piece of pipe that can then be attached to a hydraulic coupler. get a hydraulic hose and connect to another tractor, [ull the lever and see what happens. Has anyone ever tried this? Does it work? everytime?

MY 49 farmall h was/is stuck. I tryed... using the starter, parking it on a hill and let gravity work on it and turning the rear wheel by hand occasionally. Pulled the head and left diesel in the cylinders for a month or so. some gentle banging with hammer and wood(some not so gentle), a little careful pulling it in gear with a pickup but too afraid of damage to really get after this one. dropped the oil pan and was able to remove the center two pistons via the rod cap removal and pounding the pistons up with a brass drift pin. The other two were too high up in the bores to remove the rod caps bolts. Removed radiator and fan and belts to get to crank pulley and pipewrench on it FINALLY broke it loose. But the pistons will only travel the upper 1" or so in the bores. The Rust has eaten into the sleeves so bad that they rings won't allow the piston to come down but liberal doses of Penetrating oil under the pistons and on the top with a straw nozzle will eventually work to get the other two down to get the bolts out of the caps. Them bang them up the top is what I'm going to do. Good luck.

Try to find a penetrant called Kroil,its supposed to work well .

Before doing all that, do what many of us who get frozen engines do. Pour white vinegar into the cylinders to let it eat the rust. After a few days, the engine will spin freely by hand.

i once helped someone unstick a truck engine by using a grease gun . first remove all spark plugs and use your favorite penetrating fluid to soak the cylinders . find a piston that is on the power stroke and past tdc about an inch or more . use a piece of wire to help determine this and also observing the valves and the distribator rotor position . ( you could back off the valve adjustments for a cylinder to seal it ) (also could take off oil pan to check piston position ) fill cylinder as nearly full as you can with cup grease then install a plug adapter with zerk fitting .connect grease gun and pump away. we also used a socket and large breaker bar on the crankshaft pulley bolt with a 4 foot cheater bar . in any case you do not want the piston at the top or bottom of its stroke or you wont get any movement . after the engine was free we left plug out of the cylinder with the grease in it and started the engine...grease flew for 15 minuites until it cleared its self.

We have done this several times. We use two spark plug adapters and screwed hydraulic couplers to them, then hooked them up to an IH 656. With the tractor idling, give the hydraulic lever a quick tug one way then the other. Watch the crankshaft pulley or fan for movement. It won't move much. Of course before this, take the valve cover and rocker arm assembly off and hook to two cylinders that the valves are completely closed or it will not work.

I heard of a product called Gibb penetrate. made by Machines & More out of Tennessee. I tried it and it worked better than anything that i have ever used. I restore tractors and have had many times run into stuck engines.

Don't even think about it, the head is good for 150# max. If you put 2000# pressue to a 3 or 4 in piston the push will be in the neghborhood of 10 tons [or better] and blow the engine beyond repair.

I havent heard of doing that, but i have heard of taking coca-cola and pouring that in the cylinders. Let it set till it has all seeped down and then try to knock ur pistons out... I have heard the same with diesil fuel.. I have even talken a torch and heated the piston up from the inside of the skirt and pounded them out too... That worked on my ol' rusty farmall!!

About a month ago I thought i'd try soaking rusty and greasy parts in Coke, as I had heard it was supposed to work.
Sure didn't do too much on either. I think it was a waste of time . But you know what they say , Nothing Ventured.... Maybe Diet , Cherry or Vanilla Coke would work better?

If you have a large space heater take it and let it blow on the engine block to warm it up I have filled a cylinder with diesel and then put the heater to the engine and been able to free it up.

If an engine is really stuck, none of the above ideas will work, vinegar, Coke a joke, pounding will destroy the pistons. use the Kroil to soak and soften the rust, then mount a strong channel or I beam into head bolt holes with lengths of threaded rod, take a short bottle jack and some small solid oak blocks and put the jack under the channel or beam and apply pressure with the jack to push the pistons loose
