New alternater, new voltage regulator, battery is good. Problem being when the - cable is disconnected from the battery post engine stops dead like the key being turned to off. Any ideas about this? I'm becoming desparate.

Some alternators will be damaged by removing the battery cable if the engine is running- creates an "uncontrolled open". Alternator has no reference voltage (or feedback from the battery) and regulator kicks the output voltage sky-high. For any charging system, other non-destructive tests are available. Removing the cable on a running engine is not recommended.

The test you're doing is probably no good. Some alternators won't charge if the battery is out of the circuit.

The battery in one of my mom's cars had a cracked terminal on the battery. Road vibration would sometimes open the connection to the battery. When that happened, the car would die instantly. Opening the hood would jiggle the connection just enough to make it work again. That one took a while to find!

Don't know what tractor your working on, but on my Super MTA it will quit without having the battery hooked up. Electronic ignition needs a battery, ya know when you have a coil and distributor it needs the battery.

only way to make it run without the battery is to get a magneto and put it on.

Steven

Steven, I hate to be the one to tell you this, but you are dead wrong. Diesels only use the battery for starting. All diesel tractors I have ever seen will run with the key turned off. Most GM cars and trucks with electronic ignition, coil, and distributors will run with no battery connection. Happy motoring!

Seems to me that I once read that taking the cable of the battery while its running will spike the voltage and fry the diodes. May be wrong but am sure I read something like that once.

Alt is wired wrong or not working. Get a more modern alt with internal reg. Then you only need two wires to run system. And motor should run with cable taken off(easy ck. if charging)

System is charging, had a tester put on.Any danger in just using it as is or is there something not right with the coil or in between the v-regulator and coil.
