Rust fuel tank

Just picked up a JD620 last friday, Having a real problem with rust plugging up fuel line, flushed tank on tractor 8 times with no luck, still plugging up, have had rust problems before just never this bad! Finally pulled tank,carb, fuel bowl and line and am going to go thru them all.
My question is what would be best way to clean tank out? You can hear the rust rolling around inside of tank! Do the fuel tank sealers really work? What type works best?
Any Ideas?

Some time ago someone on the forum suggested putting a couple handfuls of 1/2" nuts in the tank and duct taping it to a tractor wheel. Then jack up the tractor and run the wheel around with the nuts bouncing around in the tank knocking the rust loose like a rock tumbler. I have done this with a smaller tank and it really works well. Then flush the tank and use one of the fuel tank rust removers. The one I used was available from the Eastwood Company. You have to be careful with the rust remover, because if you leave it in the tank too long it will create a hole in the most rusted areas. Roger

I had the same problem on my Farmall M and if you want a permiment fix take it to your nearest radiator shop and ask them to clean and coat it. Worked great on my M. Hope I was help!

I have also tried the Kreem in a badly rusted motorcycle tank, and it is working well now three years later. See the link below for a product review of it. I think if you don't have any major holes it is a good product.

I had a very similar problem on my 41 Case VI. I finally went to a motorcycle shop and purchase a tank sealer kit (about $30.00). I used soap and water with about a cup of small nuts and bolts to scrub the tank by shaking for about 30 minutes to loosen all the rust flakes. Got several small holes, JB Weld sealed fine. Then used the kit. It worked great and has been holding gas for nearly a year of operation now. I might mention that I precisely followed the instructions in the kit. Don't try to short cut any step or the stuff will peel and you'll have a bigger problem than you had with the rust.

I have had three of my gas tanks repaired by Gas Tank Renu-USA (231)238-4662. They cut a hole in the tank, sandblast and clean it good, then coat it with a special formulated coating and bake it in an oven. Other methods are just a temporary solution as condensation will cause more rust. You will still always have the same problems, and never know when your tractor is going to quit running and have to put a new filter on it. Once you have your gas tank done by RENU it is guaranteed for life.
