I have a WD45 NFront that I am having problems with. The two rear bolts that hold the PTO shaft in place came loose and oil drained from the bolt holes. None of the oil resivoires are low. Is this oil coming out of the rear Diff.? Where do I fill this and how full? At the same time the Trans. stuck into reverse. Are these two things related? It feels as if the shifter handle came unhooked. If they are not related.... how do I fix the shifter. How do I take it apart to reconect the lever?

THANKS!!!!! Chris

Chris, Your trans sticking in reverse is probably a result of wear on the end of the gear shift lever. My WD does this every once in a while if I am not careful when shifting. The worn end slides out of the slots on the shifter slide and as a result you get the gears out of sync so to speak. When this happens, I have to remove the battery box, the cover on the trans, and repostion the gears to neutral. Then I position the gear shift to neutral position and carefully put the cover and gear shift lever back on the transmission. It is a little tricky but I have done it several times in less than 30 minutes.

Usually this problem occurs when I am shifting while using the front end loader. Evidently, I pull up on the shift lever while shifting and get it out of position. The proper fix of course would be to get a new lever that isn't worn. I have heard of some guys brazing the end and filing to shape it back to origional.

BTW, I just reread your post and realized that because you have a WD45, the positioning might be a little different. I have a WD45 also and when I repositioned the shift lever/cover during restoration, I had to put everything in the reverse position to put it in sync. This is because the angle of the sliders is different from the WD. What helped is that I had the tractor on blocks at the time so I could determine when I had the trans in reverse. I suppose I could do the same with the ignition off and using the hand crank if the tractor is on the ground.

Sorry about the length. Hope this helps

Assuming you have a WD or WD-45, look on the LH side of the tractor near the battery box. There are two pipe plugs, a larger one ahead of and a smaller one back from the clutch "lockout" latch. Fill BOTH of these to the bottom of their holes with 80/90 gear oil. Don't confuse these with the hydraulic system filler just ahead of these two plugs; it has a 1/4 turn cap with a bayonet fill level indicator. To drain the Tranny/Diff. (a good idea if you don't know how well your tractor has been maintained in the past) you must remove three plugs, one under diff., one under tranny and one on bottom of PTO housing. Total capacity (w/PTO) is 18 Qts.

These are the results that I got I hope it helps
