Welds on final drive

Cleaned up a pair of Lo-Boy final drives that I was going to install on a Cub today and I noticed a couple of spots that were welded on the case either side of where the axle comes out of the housing. One is about 3" long and the other is about 1 1/2" long. Looks like a repair for a crack. The welds are brazed. Should I be worried about using that housing? I don't know how strong a brazed weld is.

Braze weld cast all the time as good as new if you know how. Finish properly can't tell it was done. If its not leeking use it.

As a Machinist/welder/engine rebuilder for 33+ years I will give you this FREE advice: DON'T TRUST/DEPEND on a brazed joint. Brazing is a "quick and dirty" way of welding, especially two dis-similiar metals (cast iron-steel, sheet metal-steel, etc). I once tried to machine a head that had been cracked/brazed. MOST high speed machine cutting tools WILL CLOG up when machining cast iron/steel and then coming to a Brazed joint. You can "get by" with brazing the (outside) axle housings on a very small tractor like the Cub; BUT DON"T try this on a large tractor orcrawler. The brazed weld simply WILL NOT tolerate any weight stess, etc. Remember, the only metal more soft than BRONZE is pure BRASS.

If the bronze was put on correctly it will be no problem at all.

Give the areas where the weld (braize) is done a good close inspection. I never was that good with braizing rod to do cast, but know of many people that are and were. There shouldn't be anything wrong with this repair, and since this is not a common repair anymore. Most likely the tractor has been used for many years like this without any problems.

Jim, You might be right about the final drive being welded like that for a long time. The welds look ok and the crack doesn't seem to be spreading. Anyway, I think I will go ahead and use it (I can get another one if it fails). Thanks for your response.
