the stater on the tractor will turn and crank the tractor but when it is turned aloose it goes dead what is wrong

Are talking about taking out the starter out and turning it over ? if so then you might have a brush broke in the started or you crushed a brush when you installed the first time around. if the started has only three brushes working it will not turn over the engine . 6vlts sys i'm not sure with a 12 vlt sys but I thnk it will be the same because you are breaking the feild around the armature. you might have to rebuild the started . hope this infomation worked.:)

Are you saying that you can start the tractor and it will run until you release the starter button, then it goes dead? If so, there is a problem in the electrical system somewhere. Be sure that battery terminals are clean and tight. Be sure that battery is properly grounded. If it has the original 6V system, the (+) positive terminal of the battery connects to "ground".Look it over good paying close attention to the wiring. You may spot the problem.
