I just started the process of restoring a 51 cub.
It runs pretty good so i don't anticipate a major overhaul. There is a good deal of carbon build-up in the cylinder head which I'm in the process of removing. Other than the carbon, the valves & cylinders look to be in pretty good shape. I'd appreciate any advice as to what cleaning solution would do the best job. Also, while I have the head exposed is there anything else I should examine before re-assembling. I am waiting on the arrival of the video sold by yesterdaystractors that deals with re-building a cub motor so I should have a good resource in a few days.
Thanks in advance,
Don

It's been a long time since I worked on engines, about 25 years, but I think that was a flat head engine, valves in block. Anyway, you can remove a lot of carbon with a set of screwdrivers to break the carbon loose. Then some wire wheels for your drill to finish it off. If you are looking for a really clean head you can take it to a shop that can sandblast or tumble clean the head.

While you got the head off,I would take it to a shop ,let them clean it ,check for cracks you can't see and have them grind the valves....

IF YOU WANT THE HEAD TO BE AS CLEAN AS POSSIBAL IT WOULD BE BEST TO TAKE IT TO A MACHINE SHOP AND HAVE THEM CLEAN IT AND RE-SEAT THE VALVES.IF YOU WOULD RATHER DO THE WORK YOURSELF, A WIRE BRUSH ON THE END OF A DRILL WORKS GOOD FOR REMOVING THE CARBON, 3M ALSO MAKES AN ABRAISIVE DISC THAT IS EXCELLENT TO USE ON FLAT SURFACES, THAT CAN ALSO BERUN BY A DRILL. I AM RESTORING A FARMALL (A) AND TOOK THE HEAD INTO THE MACHINE SHOP. THEY CLEANED THE HEAD INSTALLED THE HARDENED VALVE SEATS, SO THAT THE TRACTOR CAN RUN ON UNLEADED FUEL, INSTALLED NEW VALVES AND VALVE GUIDES, SEATED THE VALVES AND ALSO CHECKED THE HEAD FOR CRACKS, ALL FOR ABOUT 350.00.THIS IS THE BEST WAY TO GO IF YOU CAN.
