After getting generator output checked and OK, then replacing a dead voltage regulator on a 6V positive ground system, still getting no response on the ammeter to indicate charge back to battery.
Any suggestion where to go from here? PC

polk crawler, before discarding the ammeter make sure the battery {only} is hooked to one post & {ALL} the loads including the charging system are hooked to the other post. If the charging system is hooked to the same post on the ammeter as the battery it will not show a charge.

If your machine has battery (not magneto) ignition, turning the ignition on without starting the engine should cause an ammeter indication of several amps discharge. Likewise turning on the lights. If your machine has a mag and no lights, temporarily connecting an electrical load to the GENERATOR terminal (not the BATTERY terminal) of the ammeter should cause several amps discharge to be indicated.

If the above tests cause no ammeter movement, the pointer is stuck - which happens sometimes. Best bet is simply to replace the ammeter with a new one.

Bob: Have mag ignition. Thanks for the suggestion. I suspect the ammeter is dead. PC

I have a D-17 Allis Chalmers tractor. We had trouble with the batteries staying up. I discovered that the Ampmeter was bad. It showed very little charge or discharge. Must have been leaking internally. Changed the meter and all is well. No more problems.
Good Luck
