Steering Wheel Repair

We are trying to get several pieces of equipment back into operation here on the farm. (Mainly 49-50 chevy trucks and Allis Chalmers WD/WC/CA) All of these have been sitting around in the barnyard for 15-30 years.

The rubber on the steering wheels has gotten dry and powdery, to the point where when you touch it, it rubs off and leaves a stain on your hands/clothes that's hard to wash off.

Aside of getting a new wheel, is there anything we can put on this old rubber to make it usable, at least for the time being, so it isn't so rough and doesn't rub off?

Wrapping it with electrical tape is a quick and easy fix. Also saw an idea on these boards recently about a product available to put rubber or plastic like coating on tool handles that is available at NAPA- get enough to rotate the steering wheel in a deep pan of it, let it dry. Archives should have that story with the part number.

Whipe the wheel with a solvent (paint thinner) until all,the powder is removed.....Use a tooth brush to clean out the cracks.....Fill the cracks with Bondo and shape with sand paper....use a Epoxi paint..... But any good spray paint will do.....

I have used JB Weld to fill in the cracks on the steering wheel. It works great and is easy enough to sand.
