The old Black Hawk, Golden Eagle 40D4 popped right off after 25 years. My husband is now ready to get started, now what? He is interested in restoring it, but doesn't know where to begin. Could anyone recommend a site or a book that will help? Thanks!!!

Hey, I'm doing my first restoration too. I bought several books, but my favorite is the Antique Tractor Bible. Has some real commonn sense ideas on how to go about it. This site is also a big help.

Jack up the radiator cap and replace everything underneath and behind it. Seriously, for most people, getting it running is the most important thing. Since yours already does, do a compression check on the cylinders to see if it needs rings, etc. If you can use it enough to determine oil consumption, that could mean rings or bearings are needed. Make sure the transmission has no unusual sounds- or replace bad gears, bearings, etc. Check for oil leaks on all seals- engine, tranny, rear axle components. Replace those before final painting, or the leaks ruin a good paint job. Straighten out dents on sheetmetal. Check franchised bookstores like B. Dalton, Barnes and Noble, for books on restoring. These boards are also a good resource. Good luck!

I'm new at this too (22), and all I can say is get as much literature as possible. I believe there are books about restoring sheet metal and painting tractors and stuff, right on hand I don't remember where. But yeah, any literature you can get on hand is valuable. Try to learn as much as you can.
