Bought an Allis Chalmers CA, the guy drove it off the truck and it wouldn't start. Finally got it started ran it from 1/2 hour and it stalled and won't start. Bought a rebuilt starter because the starter would spin but wouldn't turn over the engine, thought it was the Bendix. Rebuilt starter still won't start it. The bottom pulley won't budge by moving the belt. How can I get this to move without taking the tractor apart? Could it be the flywheel? Rookie

Take the starter off if you don't have an inspection hole and look at the flywheel teeth. You need to bar over the engine as you look. If the teeth are ground off and a lot of metal flakes inside the housing the the flywheel ring gear is bad. If the teeth are good then you have a problem with the starter engaging the teeth. Look for wear pattern on surfaces of flywheel and end of starter drive for clues of improper alignment. I had one that stripped the splines of the starter drive and sounded like a flywheel. Check carefully before tearing it apart. If worn teeth on flywheel are not to bad you can take a file and dress them up throught the starter hole. Good luck!
