It is stuck really tight, we pulled it around the yard with our 1256 and let the clutch out a bunch of times and she didn't budge. When I got it I drained about 3 gallons of water from the crankcase, then about 3 gallons of sludge came out. There was oil up on the rocker arms when I pulled the valve cover. It doesn't appear to have any rust inside the top end, not sure about the bottom. I filled the exhaust and intake with diesel fuel and it didn't leak down to the oil pan so nothing is broken, also the radiator is full of antifreeze. So I am quite sure nothing is broken yet.

What is the best way to unstick an engine? I have it filled with diesel right now so hopefully it will soak up a little bit. If I don't get it loose in about a month it's going in the garage and I plan on tearing the engine down and probably rebuilding the whole thing in the process.

Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Steven

i've got a 400 that was stuck. we filled the cylinders with a fuel condiditoner called Essentialube from Hydrotex. My dad sells this stuff. after a week or two of refills, we pulled it with our 1456 and popped the clutch. it finally popped loose. Essentialube is similar to Marvel Mystery Oil. i've used both and had better luck with Hydrotex.

steve , just got the son's farmall H unstuck, it was grizzly. took the oil pan off put a hydraulic jack under the piston that we wanted to go up, jack was placed on crank shaft next to the rod cap( not on the rod cap) lifted the tractor some and hammered with a 2" dia x 13" long driver and a sledge downward on the suspected stuck piston, but the one thing that i feel is important , is to measure from the top of the block ( cylinder head off of course) to the top of the pistons and record this info on a log sheet to refer to when you need a break from swinging the old shelaylay...we used a big steel bearing race to protect the top of the pistons, we soaked it with vinegar and got alot of rust loosen up first( yes, white vinegar) move the jack to the opposing cylinders to turn engine the opposite way , when it moves it not be noticable but since you measured you can tell that way! then when it's all the way down ,hone it before you go up with it, and yes buy a can of P B Blaster to shut everybody up .get up on a stand to help you swing your sledge comfortably. We did not break the crankshaft although it was a concern, hey desperate times call for , you get the idea, Good luck !

Are the pistons stuck??
If so, make a plate that fits over the pistons, and fasten it with te head bolts, and one hole in the middle, to a Grease nipple, remember to loosen the piston from the axle. and fill the hole with grease, so you dont have to pump it full, from the grease gun, and remember to have a gasket between the thik plate and the engine, You will need a lot of grease, and a lot of time is needed too, because this can take a while, but the pistons will finaly pop out.

This sounds like a good Idea!!!!Instead of filling the cylander with grease, How about using diesel fuel. Then pumping grease or diesel fuel into the chamber.

I know of an instance where they used a diesel injector tester pump to push the piston out of an old air cooled single cylander motor.

You probably won't like this answer, but here it is. You can spend a day or weeks getting the engine to turn, but it still probably won't run worth a damn if at all. 99 percent of all seizures come from water seeping into the exhaust and running down the open exhaust valve or valves, as the case may be, and seizing up the respective cylinder(s). You can get the engine to turn, but all the snake oil in the world will not repair the pitted out exhaust valve seats caused by the water. If i were you I would just pull off the head and soak the rusty jugs with your choice of lubricant and use a peice of wood 4x4 block and a sledge to break the cylinders loose. Then I would examine the valve seats for pitted and get a seat grind. No point getting the tractor running and finding out it constantly backfires and won't run on one or more cylinders due to the lack of compression caused by the pitted seats. I think for the cost, I would just cleanup the rusty cylinders, install the newly ground head and test run the tractor. bottom end is probably ok since oil floats on water and a couple of gallons of water would not reach the crankshaft.
