Whats the best way to fix a cracked block, cracked between cylinders where the O rings on the sleeves go.. cant afford a machine shop...Jim

Prior to joining the military, I worked in Agriculture and Industrial Equipment Repair. I know that this sounds scary and shade tree type maintenance, but if the crack in the block is not severe/big. Try putting a bottle of BARS Leak in the Radiator after you reassemble the engine. Make sure that the engine is running and that the water in the radiator is hot prior to doing this. Also it would be a good idea to run the engine for at least an hour or two before shutting it down. Have had to do this a couple of times and it worked without any problems. If you do this make sure that if you sell it to tell the new or prospective buyer. You will both sleep better at night if they buy it and are aware of it.

I had this problem once, and could not find a way to fix it without worring about coolant getting into the crankcase. I think the problem it that those o-rings need a clean, smooth surface to seal on otherwise you will have green in your oil. Also think about the temp changes in there with expansion and contraction, and the material you're working with is cast iron which is somewhat touchy. What I did was to start looking around for a repacement block. Worthington ag in St.Johns, Taylor Equipment in Sears, a fellow in Clare that has several salvage tractors, and anywhere else I saw 2-3 old tractors sitting out that haven't been used in years. I should warn you that I took apart about 3 engines before I found a good one.

I JB welded the cracked area and am putting new O rings in, I will put waterglass in the engine as well to seal it, if this doesnt work I will buy a replacement block,,,Thanks,,,Jim
