Has anyone tried to use an air nail scaler to get all the old paint off of the heavy cast iron portions of a tractor prior to painting? Seems like it would be almost as good as sand blasting. Thanks for any comments.

Fred, needle scalers are great for getting into corners & for re-texturing cast areas that have been welded on, but leave a little to desired if trying to do the whole tractor.
~They are slow, loud, the needles tend to get rounded ends then it slows the process.
~I use a needle scaler to supplement the sand blasting process but wouldn't want to do a full tractor with one.
~The use of a power rotary brush, with needle scaler used in the hard to get at places is good if the parts can’t be removed from the tractor so sand would be out of the question……….

BEING A MOBILE TRUCK MECHANIC (& LONG TIME TRACTOR LOVER ) ,I'VE USED A NEEDLE SCALER ON WELD SLAG AND RUST. IT WORKS WELL, BUT WITH MOST TRACTOR CASTINGS THAT HAVE HELD GEAR OIL,SCALERS WILL NOT CLEAN PARTS GOOD ENOUGH TO PAINT.
