There is an adjustment, usually on top of the oil filter canister. Access is thru the crankcase cover.10 - 15 psi is normal. Ron Mn.

The bearing clearance and the pump pressure flow characteritic sets the oil pressure. There is normally a relief valve to allow by pass flow during cold conditions but when the oil warms up, the relief valve should close and the oil pressure is then determined by the bearing clearances and the pump. The relief valve can stick open and that would cause low oil pressure even with good bearings.

If you have a problem with low oil pressure, check the relief valve first and consider replacing the pump. They do wear out. If a pump replacement doesn"t fix it, then you are looking at bearings but you"ve got a new pump and I always recommend a new pump with a rebuild.

I'm not a JD person, but the only way you "adjust" oil pressure is to overhaul the engine, unless it's something simple like a worn oil pump. If it is not the pump it is crank and/or cam bearings. JD forum can tell you which are the right gauges.

Some engines do have an oil pressure adjustment, altho it's completely true that nothing will help worn bearings.

I doubt if there was an adjustment on a 47 JD, unless the pump itself was defective.

I"m sure you"re correct on the JD; I misunderstood your comment to mean engines in general.
