Simplicity 6216 - Ignition Problem

I have a Simplicity 6216 that I purchased earlier in the year. The Simplicity model number is 1691035 and the it has a Briggs magnetron 16HP engine - model 402707-0145-01.

The tractor needed a new ignition switch which was provided by the seller (I was given Simplicity part 178280). It turns out this was not the correct ignition switch for this tractor - probably for a non-magnetron ignition. Unfortunately the pin configuration was exactly the same on this wrong switch and I installed and attempted to start the tractor. When the motor didn"t crank, I spent some time testing the safety devices and then I started to smell a burning electrical odor coming from the engine after switching to the crank position a few times. This led me to verify the part number for the ignition switch and obtain the correct one which resolved the cranking issue.

However, now I do not have any spark while cranking. I think that the wrong ignition switch may have directed battery voltage to the magnetron armiture/ignition module and destroyed it.

Is there any way to test the armiture or should I just replace it given the situation? Any other things I should look at?

Thanks for the response Bob. I replaced the magnetron coil assembly last week and that solved the problem - tractor is running good now. The wrong ignition switch that I installed must have directed battery voltage to the coil/ignition module and cooked it.

James - You can test the magnetron by disconnecting the ignition "kill" wire (the low voltage wire running to the magnetron) then cranking the engine. If the mag is still good it'll throw a healthy spark when cranked.
