I have a jd 730 gas that when using the remote outlet to move a cylinder, it howls very loudly under the seat. This only happens when moving the cylinder slowly. In the fast position, it works fine. What is the problem? How can it be fixed?

Sounds like you are just hearing the high pressure oil flow thru the spool valve that you have just barely feathered open ( to go slow ). when you open the spool more, to go faster.. there is less restriction.. and less noise.

Ever have a cyl that is inthe 'up' position, and after shutting down the machine you decide to drop it or safety. if you just knockt he valve full open, the load drops and you hear a quick 'whoosh' sound as the oil evacuates. If instead you just barely crack the spool.. you hear a 'PSSSSS SSSS' sound as the oil escapes under pressure thru the small orifice created by the barely open spool.

Listen to a garden hose running with no restriction.. pretty quiet.. now.. put your thumb on the end to make a high presure spray... got louder didn't it?

that's my WAG and 2 cents..

The 730 has an open center hydraulic pump that produces a constant flow of hydraulic oil.
With a spool type control valve, the total constant flow of oil from the pump must either flow to a cylinder port or the valve return port. When you have the valve only slightly cracked open to the work position, the return port is totally blocked and the work port is very restricted. Most of the pump output must now flow through the excess pressure relief valve which makes the noise.
Your options are to reduce engine speed to reduce the hydraulic pump output, or open the valve atleast 1/2 open, but in short spurts to control the cylinder movement.

Thankyou for the information. At least now I know that it isn't causing internal problems. It's just pressure relief. Wryan
