Checked the compression on my 46 Farmall B using the old thumb test and discovered very weak compression on 1 and 4. I had the manifold off already so I put the plugs back in and turned it over by hand and could get pressure out the exhaust port on the compression stroke. I could also hear the sound of air pushing past the valve (I think). I removed the head and found a ton of crud in the cylinders (B hasn't run for years.) I removed and cleaned all he valves and smoothed the seats carefully. The cylinder walls look and feel very smooth. I do not have the time, talent or tools to remove the pistons and everything that goes with that and I can't pay anybody else to do it either. Wish I could. Finally getting to the questions.

Is there anything else that I should do right now before replacing the head? Also, what kind of gasket sealant should I use?

Thanks for your help Jeff

are you talking about using the old head gasket? personally i wouldnt. more trouble than the cost of a new head gasket. clean mating serfaces of head and block and install new gasket without sealant. just my 2 cents. d. coleman

Some people use permatex copper sealer.. or even silver / copepr spray paint.

I personally wouldn't use a sealer on a good new gasket if the head and deck are good.... If your deck is less than perfect.. then go for it.
