does the amp. meter have to go between the alternator and the battery for it to work properly?

I think it would be better to say that it goes between the battery and every thing else--except the starter. Battery on one side, lights, alternator, switch to coil, etc on the other.

Yes it does. One side of the ammeter goes to the battery, with the alternator output and any electrical load connecting to the other side.
