I recently purchased a 1957 ford 600 that I am trying to put back in service. It had been sitting for about 1 1/2 years; the guy I bought it from had just bought it himself and didn't know much about it. I rebuilt the carb, it has good compression, and was easy to get started. Problem is there is a little smoke (bluish white) Most likely it is burning some oil, I don't know if it is seals rings or rings, It may stop after running it for a while. I am going to change the oil and was thinking about going to synthetic. I was told that the molecules in synthetic are larger and more uniform in size than in the standard oils, therefore they are less likely to find their way past older seals. Is there any truth to this? Any advise on this?

Make sure the engine is clean inside, the synthetic oil will clean a dirty engine and clog the oil pump screen!

Hi Mike, The color of smoke you describe is not really indicative of oil burning. Oil will burn black or grey but not blue. Sounds like you may be running a little rich. Just my opinion, it is free so take it for what it's worth. Chris

I guess I didn't describe the smoke very well, it probably grayish in color. I hope ypu are correct on running rich.
Thanks for the advise

My experience has been only with Mobil 1 synthetic oil(have used it for about 30 years)

I have used it in new engines and engines that had over 150,000 miles on mineral oil.
It seems that leakage through gaskets and seals are not made worse by switching to synthetic oil, and consumption through rings and guides goes down by about 50%.
