In the shipyards I have worked I have seen equipment ducttaped and covered with plastic and still the dust seeped into the inside. I was calling about a vehcle or tractor when the seller mentioned that it had been sandblasted-I just thanked him and hung up. NEVER BLAST NEAR UNCLEANABLE ASSEMBLIES. Also sandblasting doesn't get grease off well. Properly used blasting is great-the impingement(great word huh?) of the medium tends to harden the surface a bit, and the rough surface is good for paint adherence.

I agree. there is a guy in my area that has a machine shop, all older equipment, all set up in an old cement block dairy barn at the family home place.-had an electrical fire that didn't really hurt a lot, someone that was helping him clean up suggested sandblasting the blistered paint on the old equip.i was there shortly after he got back in operation & he had gears/bearings out of a large lathe that had eaten up. think he had to tear everything in the building down.
