I'm restoring a 1910 mccormick grain binder. I'm replacing the sheet metal that protects the canvas behind the sickle. The sheet metal is about 16 gage and was riveted to the frame. My question is was this riveted with heated rivets or not and if so how was this done, as I have no experience with this. The top of the rivets need to be hammered down flush for clearance of the canvas and I don't see how I could do this with cold rivets because it would be hard to have a firm backing (anvil) on which to hammer.

Thanks

wally

I'd say--as long as you got the rivets in tightly, then using a welding torch, heat the rivets and hammer them flat. Use a block of iron as a backup. I'd keep the rivet heads up against the canvas.
