I finally found a used pump for my Case 420B. About all I got for $150 was the case because the bearings are shot. Would like to replace the gears if anyone could suggest where to look. Don't think I could afford to have them made special.
Thanks.

I think my best approach is to use the front plate of the existing pump as a mounting plate and mate a new pump of similar size to it. This would give me the original gear drive. Just need to find a pump with a shaft that will mate to my gear drive with out too much work.
Thanks for the input.

From Many years of hydraulic experiance:
If the bearings were worn out so much that
they cut into the shaft enough to need
shaft replacement--THEN--the gears must
have dropped enough to undercut the case.
You will need special hardened shafts (OEM)
because just making shafts out of cold rolled
will wear out quickly, new bearings/bushings,
case and gears. (new pump) Don"t fool yourself
into thinking a "quick fix" will work.
Also: metallic particles from failed parts,
in the oil will quickly wear out the replacement
parts unless oil is changed, tank cleaned, lines
flushed. any downstream components, such as
power steering, Char Lynn motors, are already
on the way to failure due to failed pump debris.

What you may need to consider is new bushings or blanks for bushings and then bore them so you have less than a thousands clearance between the case and the gears. That may solve some of your problem as well. Just thinking out loud. That side clearance needs to be small, in fact if the gear touches the case so much the better. Questions? Also have you considered a totally different pump? I have the formula to size it up. Merry Christmas! J.

I have thought about using another pump. This is a direct drive unit with the tank around the pump. It can't put out much volume because the gears are not very big. If my calculations are correct it should put out 3.3 gpm at 1800.
I have talked with another 420 owner and he tried using a belt driven pump without much success. I tried using some of the main hydraulic system pressure but that is not the best answer either. It just sort of works.
I am open to suggestions.
Thanks.

If the bearings are shot- did they cause abrasion on the case? Doesn't take much damage and the new gears will not pump because of too much clearance.

The case is not that bad. I will just use a little heavier oil. Both shafts need to be replaced, but those are not very hard to turn. The gears are another matter. I can mill and lap both faces of the case to fix the wear from the gears on those surfaces.
Thanks for the reply.
