I just recently found a 54 mta in an old fella"s farm that was in unbeleivably nice condition with exception to a slightly stuck motor, I pulled the head off and found one cylinder/sleeve with some rusty water , the other three were clean with no ridges. I purchased and transported the tractor home, the old man said it ran fine up until it sat becauase of a rear flat, my question is : how do I determine the condition of the TA without the motor running yet? I have purchased a complete motor overhaul kit and plan on doing the best possible job to restore this machine to it"s original condition as soon as possible. please enlighten me as to the TA system. They only made a little over 2500 of these beasts so it is important to save every last one of them. your input would be greatly appreciated. thank you

This test won't absolutely prove the TA is good, but it can prove it's bad. First remove the cover from the TA clutch and verify the disc releases when the TA lever is pulled back. With the tractor in gear, the main clutch pedal released, and the TA lever pulled back, you should not be able to rotate the engine backwards. Not foolproof, but it's about all you can do till you're up & running.

I've heard there were around 26,000 made, but still... they are very rare and we should save them. My Dad has one too and it is a excellent runner.
