I have a wisconsin VH4D in a ditch witch V30 that is locked up tight. I pulled the cylinder head covers off and the piston cylinders look pretty clean. I also took off the starter and tried to turn the flywheel with a tire iron. This engine is stuck tight. The transmission is in neutral and I can spin the drive shaft so that isn't the problem. Anyone have any ideas? Is there a lock pin of some sorts? I don't have a manual for this engine. Does anyone have any idea what to check for?

Just be glad that you got if freed up and moving correctly. I have an older new holland skid steer with a VH4D and it has been a bit of a pain. Didn't know how much this darned engine was going to cost to rebuild. They are great to work on, just like a bigger version of a lawnmower engine. Everything is simple and seemingly well designed. Just waiting on the jugs to come back from the machine shop and i can get mine back together. Should run great after all i'm replacing. Initially it had one piston in several pieces and the others rather rusted in their bores. Only original parts are going to be the block and crank + con rods. Best of luck.

Got it unstuck. Several valves were stuck. I managed to get it going back and forth a little, then a little more...once the valves opened they stuck open. I kept rotating the engine and tapping the valves back in and used liberal amounts of lubricant in the ports. All the valves are opening and closing now when I turn the engine by hand.
On to the next step I suppose which would be replacing the cylinders heads (just the top part where the spark plugs screw in not the entire cylinder heads) then seeing if it has any spark.
Thanks for the great replies.

As you noticed, Those engines are notorious for sticking valves. I worked for a Ditch Witch Dealership in Texas for 22 years, with 17 of those in the shop. The V30 was still in production for a few years after I started. If you have ANY questions about one by all means let me know.

Do you know anything about the wiring for these things? I need to rewire the igniton, amp gauge, starter solenoid etc.
Thanks for the help

When you say the cylinder head covers, do you mean the individual cylinders? Or just the cylinder heads? You could have a broken crank shaft, or (if it"s been sitting for a while), possibly a rod bearing has rusted to the crank shaft journal.

If it were mine, I would probably pull the engine, hang it on a stand, and go in through the bottom end. Check out the crank shaft and rod bearings, then - if all looks OK - pull the rod caps and see if you can remove the pistons. If the pistons are hung in the cylinders, you can pull the piston cans individually.

Pretty simple engines. I had a V30 for several years. Good machine in dirt, poor in rocky conditions (where I live). If you want to become a pretty good mechanic, buy Ditch Witch.

Good luck, Dale(MO)

One of the con rod bearings could have spun and locked up. More than just the piston can lock up the engine. If it's in the lower end might be cheaper to fix than having to rebore it. Good luck. Dave
