I have a koehring-parsons backhoe with a perkins 4 cyl. diesel. Around 1977 or 1978. I read that the tach originally got its signal from the gen.? It now has a 1 wire alt. Is there
anyway to get the tach working? thanks.

Some alternators have a "tach" terminal. If your's does NOT, it is a simple matter to tap into one of the "phases", and bring a wire out for an electric tach.

The tach you have MAY not read correctly with the different signal source, though.

Check out ISSPRO.com for alternator-driven tachs, or tachs that run off of speed sensors sensing the ring gear teeth passing by.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure if someone made a converter box or some sort of device to run the tach from the alt. The tach is a motorola, But I don't know a thing about it. It has not been hooked up for quite some time.
