I torqued the connecting rods on my JD to 100 foot pounds and they are too tight. when I loosen each a half turn they are fine with 3 thou. clearance. is it fine to leave them like this? The tractor is an unstyled John Deere AR.

You may have the wrong cap matched with the rods. Check to be sure you haven't by chance switched the caps from one rod to the other.

Ron is right if you have poured bearings. You may have to add more than one shim to get it right if you had to loosen th em 1/2 turn to get it to move. Are you using plastigage to measure clearance? It is a great help, try it. You can get it at any good auto supply and its easy to use, just follow the directions.
If you have insert bearings, then some one has probably filed the rod caps to get a little more use out of worn bearings. This will result in too much "crush" on your new inserts and lock them up when torqued. I have temporarily repaired them by making shims to fit the bearing to the right clearance, but the best fix is to have an automotive machine shop resurface and reobore the rod to the correct size. Hope this helps,
Paul

If you have the babbit bearings I would add a shim to each side of the bearing. I think they are 3 thousands each. Good luck with your AR. I have a 41 AR. Ron Mn.
