This might sound really dumb, but I am curious as to which way the head gasket is to be installed on a John Deere AR. The manual I have says the smooth side goes towards the head. The gasket has a paper side and a steel side, I am assuming the steel side is considered the smooth side and should face the head. Could some one please confrim this for me thanks much, Ryan

Look at the gasket in the area that has the fire ring that encircles the hole for the pistons. One side should be smooth and the other is where it is roll crimped around. Put this smooth side to the block.
